Supervisor: Manager of Public Programs & Nature Education
Pay Type: Seasonal, Part-time, Hourly
Compensation: $15.00 per hour
Position Summary: The Learning Engagement Intern will primarily interact with children and adults in the Lena Meijer Children’s Garden (LMCG) in a variety of daily activities and assist the efforts of the Learning Engagement Department through planning, facilitating, and evaluating various events and programs. This is a paid seasonal internship, May through August.
Essential Functions
- Assist with clerical tasks ranging from data entry to assisting guests with program information.
- Purchase and prepare materials for programs and assist with creating interpretive materials.
- Assist with a variety of needs for the LMCG, including coordinating daily activities, responding to visitor needs, supervising general public visitors and monitoring emergency and safety concerns
- Assist with various LMCG public programs as needed, including some programs at the Michigan’s Farm Garden.
- Assist with program evaluation by conducting surveys.
- Provide direction and oversight for volunteers as needed.
- Produce a self-directed final project that will support education at Meijer Gardens.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Education and / or Qualifications preferred:
- Education: Must be working toward, or have recently completed, a degree in education, the arts, sciences, museum studies, or related field.
- Experience: Some previous teaching experience or experience interacting with the public in a cultural institution or informal learning environment preferred.

Working Conditions: Basic mobility is expected in offices, grounds, and exhibition areas. Ability to observe details at close range and communicate information accurately with others. Engage in occasional object manipulation with or without assistance, and efficiently navigate the workspace to access essential resources. Manage occasional lifting tasks, and ability to handle objects weighing up to 20 pounds with ease and regularity. Regularly operates in outdoor and challenging weather conditions, including exposure to temperatures exceeding 100°F and dropping below 0°F, rain, high humidity, snow, and direct sunlight. This encompasses both outdoor settings and greenhouse environments. May entail exposure to various workplace hazards such as hazardous materials, loud noise, and extreme heat/cold.
